This week we are featuring the overall process of making a ski with the show “How its Made.” The segment does a great job of illustrating the step-by-step process and the labor that goes into laying up and pressing a single set of skis.

We finally have some snow falling from the sky, and lots of it! We’re right in the middle of these snow showers!

Edit: The lake effect storm the past few days dropped around 10-12 inches of fresh snow on the Ellicottville area, meaning Holiday Valley and Holimont are having some great skiing conditions this week. Couple the fresh snow with bitter cold temperatures and you get optimal conditions for the snowmaking crews to pump out some man-made snow to solidify the base and open the majority of the slopes.

Foxfire at Holiday Valley is currently received a big dose of snowmaking this week and the 42/78 Park crew has something up their sleeve for that slope this weekend. Stay tuned…

The second demo day of the season has kicked off up at Holimont! Greg is up on the hill sharing his infinite wisdom and knowledge about our demo fleet that he has available for you, the customer, to try out! It is a great opportunity to try out the new technology that has been integrated into skis and snowboards this year and get a feel for a new equipment before you buy it. You wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it, so why do that with a ski or board?

Greg will be up on the hill until about 3pm today, so stop draggin’ ass and get up there to see what we have to offer. “G” will show you how we roll!

The ski season has begun in Western New York! Holiday Valley opened on Tuesday December 13th with one lift and two trails open (Yodeler and Candy Cane). Today, Wednesday, December 14th, they will open Mardi Gras and the Mardi Gras lift along with a small rail park at the base of run.

The Snowmaking crew was in top form the past week making enough snow to open the resort this week. The new automated snowmaking system on Mardi Gras, that can be turned on with one touch on a smartphone, was integral in getting the hills in shape for opening day. Luckily the weather has been cooperating enough so that Holiday Valley could open for the Free Demo Day on Saturday the 17th! Sign up for the event at the High Performance Shop in the Main Lodge at the base of Mardi Gras.

Lets hope the cold weather continues and a big Lake Effect storm blows in and drops a few feet of the fresh stuff soon!

The US Grand Prix of Freeskiing got kicked off today at Copper Mountain with the Men’s Superpipe Qualifiers. The events have been given World Cup status by the International Ski Federation (FIS). Little about the events has changed due to the designation, but the US will host three of the four events. The fourth even will be held in Jyväskylä, Finland on February 25th. The start of the competition season only makes the lack of snow more intolerable.
